Buying unfinished furniture is great for anyone who loves a DIY project. Unfinished furniture allows you to customize your new pieces to match what’s already in your home. It’s easy to finish unfinished furniture on your own if you have the right tools. Here’s what you need to know about your next unfinished furniture project.

You Will Need

  • Unfinished wood furniture
  • Sandpaper, both coarse and fine grit
  • A sander
  • Wood stain in the color of your choosing
  • A brush or cloth to apply the stain
  • Clear varnish
  • A brush to apply the varnish

How to Finish Unfinished Furniture

The first step in finishing your unfinished furniture is to sand the wood to even out the surface. Use a coarse sandpaper to remove any imperfections, then a finer grit to smooth out the unfinished furniture before applying stain. Be sure to remove the sawdust, either with a cloth or by spraying the piece with canned air.

Next, prepare your stain. Use a brush or a cloth to apply the stain across the wood. With a dry cloth, wipe off excess stain and make sure it is evenly applied across the surface. Let it dry completely. This process can take anywhere from several hours to an entire day, depending on how saturated the wood is.

Once the surface is completely dry, apply a coat of varnish. The varnish usually dries more quickly than the stain, as it rests on top of the wood rather than sinking into it. It’s normal for the first coat of varnish to go on unevenly, but you can use a very fine sandpaper to sand over the finished product and even out the surface.

Remove any sawdust after you’ve sanded it, then do another coat of varnish. Repeat the process until you have a smooth, even coat of clear varnish covering the entire piece of unfinished furniture.
